Congratulations to Year 8 student Tim Murray, who recently competed in the State Trampoline championships. Tim achieved his personal best at the State Championships and has qualified for the National Australian Gymnastic Championships in Queensland in May. Well done Tim, we wish you luck.
House Point Achievers
On Wednesday 27 March, we recognised and celebrated the College’s leading House Point achievers for Term 1. The top 100 students who accrued the most House Points for the term were rewarded for consistently upholding our ASC four Mutual agreements with a VIP event on the lawn. The event entailed a pizza lunch and was accompanied by our renowned resident DJ, Mr Franchina. It was an opportunity for the entire College to reflect on what it means to be an Aveley Secondary College student and recognise the value of our Mutual Agreements: respect, perseverance, appreciation, and responsibility. Congratulations to our inaugural Top 100! We’re all looking forward to seeing who will be on the VIP list for Term 2.

Hyper-Fest
This week, students were rewarded for their positive interactions in our school community with tickets to Hyperfest. In each year the top House Point recipients were acknowledged with a double pass to Hyperfest, which is WA’s longest running and largest all-ages music festival, that has returned to Midland with its stacked line-up of Australian talent. The City of Swan was kind enough to donate these passes to acknowledge our fabulous students. We hope they enjoy HyperFest this weekend.
Harmony Day
This year we observed Harmony Day and celebrated the diverse backgrounds and cultures that make up our school community. To promote inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone, we hosted a cultural fashion showcase with cultural music by DJ Franchina, had a fun photobooth and the Ellenbrook Youth Centre facilitated a badge making activity.
Student Spotlight: Raph Arrietta
Congratulations to Year 8 student Raph Arrietta who has successfully auditioned to be the drummer in the School of Rock Perth’s USA Tour band. Raph already attends three different performance bands for the School of Rock Perth, so is very excited to be heading over to America in the July school holidays to perform in nine shows. Raph’s favourite thing about drumming is ‘the experience it can give you, being able to perform drums in front of a crowd like it’s just a part of daily life’.
We are so proud of Raph’s dedication to his musical craft and hope he has a fantastic time touring the USA.
New staff: Amy Blitvich
Aveley SC would like to welcome Amy Blitvich to our English department, many students may already recognise her from her time with our HaSS department last year.
Hi everyone, my name is Amy Blitvich and I’m delighted to join the Aveley Secondary College English Department this year. I have been an English teacher for almost ten years, and in recent years I have also been working as a Year Coordinator at Mount Lawley Senior High School.
As an English teacher, I get to do my favourite thing every day: talk about great books, films and stories and the power that storytelling can have on our lives.
I am passionate about pastoral care and working with all students to ensure they can meet their goals for school and beyond. I recognise the power of school attendance in delivering better outcomes both at school, and for future health, employment and social benefits.
Bushfire Management Excursion
The Year 11 ATAR and Year 12 General Geography students went to the Perth Hills Discovery Centre to investigate bushfire risk management strategies in the fire-prone environments of Australia. Using the Perth Hills as a case study, students completed fire mapping tasks based on past bushfires, collected data in the field to investigate bushfire risk, and explored how prescribed burning is used as a risk reduction and hazard management strategy.
Rachelle Dusting Incursion
Last week, the Year 11 and 12 Art students attended a full day intensive skill builder in oil painting, run by leading Western Australian realist painter Rachelle Dusting. Dusting taught both the theory of oil painting as well as its practical application, directing students to produce two paintings each that responded to value and tone as well as colour theory.
Spect-ators
Year 10 Drama students have been participating in Youth Choices action-oriented education program to transform from passive spectators into active participants, or ‘spect-actors’. Students worked together to construct and role play real-world scenarios, such as phone use in schools or arriving late to class, and explored how each characters’ wants affected their behaviour and body language. Students finished the class with a brief improvisation game that encourages precision, control and patience.
