In a dynamic fashion incursion, Year 10 Textiles students embarked on an enriching journey guided by industry expert Karen Elizabeth Young recently.

Karen shared her wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry and students eagerly delved into the fundamental sketching of figures and innovative designs, before bringing their illustrations to life with fine pen work, vibrant colours, and intricate details.

This experience not only enhanced their artistic skills and talents but also equipped them with invaluable tools for their upcoming assessments in garment creation and any future endeavours in the ever-evolving world of fashion.

Selected students from Year 10 and 11 were privileged to attend the Motivation Foundation Civil and Mining Academy training centre in West Swan for a Try-A-Trade experience this term.

Students were involved in completing startup safety checks for Civil Construction machinery, which then allowed them to drive and operate them in a controlled environment. Students also learnt the art of “boxing up” concrete form work, pouring and finishing a section of concrete path.

The Motivation Foundation training centre is an RTO that provides industry relevant training and qualifications for Year 11 and 12 students. To find out more visit motivationfoundation.com.au

Students interested in taking part in future Try-A-Trade opportunities are encouraged to speak to their Year Coordinators or senior school team to express their interest. Student interest does exceed available places in the Try-A-Trade Career Tasters, so selections are made from known student interest and pathway readiness.

As part of the career taster program the College was able to send selected Year 9 students to a remote operations facility experience.

This group of students had the opportunity to see remote mining operations in action at the Remote Operations Centre at Perth Airport.

The students interacted with Roy Hill staff and engaged in a variety of activities including programming bots to simulate autonomous trucks at the mine site.

The excursion allowed students to identify possible career paths and areas of study beyond school. These opportunities enable our students to see where mining roles are headed and identify future opportunities.

The Student Voice process allows students to positively recognise the ways staff support their wellbeing and education. Our first Student Voice nomination for the year goes to Georgina Taylor, an amazing Art teacher who has been recognised by one of her students.

Year 7 and 8 students in our Academic Extension Program and Maths Extension classes attended a Maths Show in our Performing Arts Theatre last week.

The show was an interactive performance full of mathematical history, puzzles, magic and fun, designed to entertain and engage students and increase their interest in mathematics.

Year 12 ATAR Geography students recently participated in a fieldwork excursion hosted by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) to investigate how the processes of land cover change, including agriculture and urban development, have a significant impact on water quality and biodiversity in the Swan-Canning River catchment.

Students investigated how living streams can address the issue of water pollution and took samples to analyse water quality and biodiversity levels. They also investigated how artificial oxygenation plants help to reduce the impacts of water pollution.

This excursion complemented classroom learning and enriched students’ understanding by providing real-world context and fostering a deeper connection to the environment.

Over 100 of our Year 7-10 Sport Elite Students attended a two-night camp at Swan Valley Adventure Centre to help develop leadership skills recently.

Students took part in the inaugural Sport Elite Championships where they were split up into 8 teams and competed in four novel sports across the three days.

They also built leadership skills through activities such as a morning run, commando courses, zip-lining, orienteering and team building tasks lead by our ASC youth workers.

If you or your child is interested in being part of the SEP program, there will be trials in Week 7 of this term. The aim of the Sport Elite Program is to support student athletes in reaching their potential through development of leadership skills, physical literacy and understanding of sport science.

On Friday our Aveley Super Creators (ASC – Year 10 Education Support ASDAN group) held a fabulous Mother’s Day Stall to sell an array of handcrafted gifts including pamper packs, bath salts and homemade cards to Education Support students and staff.

Our Year 12 Student Leaders, Angel and Sofia, recently attended the WA United Nations Youth State Conference 2024.

Sofia and Angel represented their countries (South Africa and Rwanda respectively) in a series of Mock United Nation debates and informative workshops where they learnt about democracy in Australia, as well as problem solving solutions.

Interacting with like-minded youths from around the state and even some international students provided an interesting and educational experience for both students.

Our Year 11 general Science in Practice students donned their gloves and grabbed their tongs to undertake an important waste audit as part of a WasteSorted incursion last week.

The students sorted the waste from bins into different categories to find out the most common waste types for our school. Early results show that a lot of students are throwing out unopened snacks, and that lunchboxes are generally containing high amounts of plastic packaging and wrapping including zip-lock bags and gladwrap.

The data will now be analysed by WasteSorted and suggestions provided to Aveley Secondary College on how to improve our waste management and become a more sustainable and environmentally friendly school. Suggestions already include buying bulk and bringing snacks in reusable containers – it is cheaper and reduces waste!
