Our school hosted the Ellenbrook Network professional development day. It was a highly engaging and informative day and we would like to acknowledge the many staff who presented and Ms Ball for planning such a large event so successfully. The Ellenbrook Network is a great example of the successful collaboration of public schools in the community.
Visual Arts
In Visual Arts, the Years 7s have been inspired by Indigenous artist Melanie Hava, and are experimenting with colour mixing in their Painting unit. Some students have already commenced their acrylic pour backgrounds. We are hoping to have these masterpieces ready for NAIDOC Week at the end of the term.
Effective Teaching Conference
A number of our staff spent their weekend at an Effective Teaching Conference focusing on Intellectual Challenge and High Performance. We are fortunate to have a highly dedicated staff who are working collaboratively and strategically to meet our students’ needs.
College Board Vacancy
The Aveley Secondary College Board has a vacancy. The Board plays a key role in the governance of the College, oversees the schools priorities and directions including the Business and Financial Plans. The Board is a great way to be involved, to learn about the College and contribute to its achieving its vision. The Board usually meets in Week 3 and 7 of each term on a Tuesday evening. The workload is not onerous but what we need is engaged, thoughtful parents willing to be a part of making the College a school of choice. Parents are invited to ring (6296 1001) or email the Principal for more information and to express your interest. If there is more than one nomination an election will be called. The nomination form is available from the Principal or our website.
School Sports Soccer Competition
In term 2 the Year 7 and 8 students have been competing after-school in the School Sports Soccer Competition.
The boys team have played two games so far against Mercy College B team and Ballajura Community College, putting up a strong fight in both games, but coming up short. It was a great effort from all the boys on the team who demonstrated excellent leadership and teamwork on the field.
The girls team have played one game so far against Mercy College C team, coming away with a draw. All the girls played really well and demonstrated great sportsmanship with each other and the other team.
The photo is of the girls doing their pre-game ritual chant and looking professional in the new soccer uniforms.

Nationally Consistent Collect of Disability Data
Aveley Secondary College is part of a national project about students with disability and/or learning difficulties.
We have been asked to provide data about the number and type of learning needs of children at our college. The name of the college and the name of the students will not be reported.
Information about the different types of needs and the programs and resources the college uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected.
We believe it is important to contribute to this because it will help Governments and the Department develop better policies that acknowledge the level of resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia.
Sporting Academies
Our Sporting Academies were very busy yesterday! Basketball had their first session, boys AFL scored a win in their first game, girls soccer had a draw and boys soccer unfortunately came up short.
We still have places available in Boys AFL and Girls Soccer. So any of our students not yet involved are welcome to sign up and join in on the fun.
If your child would still like to participate in an Academy this term, registrations are open until Friday 17 May via Qkr.
Netball High School Cup
On Tuesday, our two Aveley SC teams competed in the Netball High School Cup. The carnival consisted of a round robin tournament against other high schools in the Northern Metro area, some of which are netball specialist schools. Team 1 were undefeated and Team 2 won three of their games and lost two including a close game by one goal.
The competition also gave us the opportunity to showcase our new netball uniforms!
We are extremely proud of our students who participated in this highly competitive carnival. The girls demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship and effort throughout the day.
Congratulations girls on a fantastic day and results!

New Staff: Cameron Pilapil
Introducing Cameron Pilapil who is joining us as a specialist Digital Technologies teacher. He has been doing some exciting work with students in the Pilbara and we look forward to him joining our team.
Hi, my name is Cameron Pilapil and I am the new Digital Technologies teacher at Aveley Secondary College. I have just moved from teaching in a remote school of WA where I have gained a substantial amount of teaching experience in Technologies and Science. I have always pushed myself to go beyond what is expected as a teacher and I hope to bring the same mindset to Aveley. I have provided after-school tutoring, participated in robotics competitions and coordinated STEM workshops throughout my teaching career. At Aveley, I will work to provide opportunities for all students to thrive in their education and enjoy the learning experience. I look forward to meeting all the staff, students and parents of the Aveley Secondary College community.
