The College immersed itself in the vibrant rhythms, colourful traditions, and captivating stories of Africa during our unforgettable Africa Day celebrations last term. The theme for this year’s celebration was “strength and diversity”.

Students got their dancing shoes on to traditional drum beats and Afro music. They also had opportunities to pose for a photo with cultural artefacts, make beaded items and friendship bracelets, and learned a lot about African hairstyling.

The school choir singing ”Siyahamba” and a drumming session with Kawaka and the College African drum team led by Ms Bukola Esin got students in high spirits.

Earlier in the term, students participated in a cultural art competition with 6 winners announced.

Recently our Year 12 Hospitality students were joined by Chef Ally from HGT to talk all things careers in Hospitality and Tourism. Students recorded questions to ask her, about all things from demands of the job, to work hours and favourite recipes. She spoke about the chemistry behind the role of a pastry chef, the fast pace of the kitchen, as well as making friendships and travelling with your qualification. While answering these questions she also prepared and plated a lovely chicken and chorizo rigatoni which the students will replicate in class!

The College recently had a large number of students complete work placements as part of their studies.

We are pleased to be able to showcase our students’ enthusiasm, work ethic and skills to employers across a range of industries. Feedback from employers is consistently positive about our students and has also resulted in some job offers.

10 of our students enrolled in our Certificate II in Building and Construction (Pre-Apprenticeship) have been offered potential employment opportunities and another student was offered an ongoing professional relationship with Vision Australia Radio.

So far in 2024, 8 students who participated in the Workplace Learning Program have secured full-time apprenticeships, employment, or a school-based traineeship.

As part of our Student Voice initiative, we would like to recognise Ubrina Tock. Ubrina is one of our Humanities Teachers and oversees our Academic Elite Program. She received lots of nominations from our students due to her capacity to engage students and deliver high quality lessons.

“I would like to thank you for being my teacher. You have taught me a lot about HASS. I enjoyed the interactive activities that you prepared, like the medieval food tasting. You are the best! Overall, I have enjoyed my first term of HASS.”

Year 7 students from Ms Kannan’s Indonesian class and Mr Clapton’s Music Specialist class were immersed in Indonesian culture when they visited the Indonesian Consulate General in Perth recently.

The students listened to a presentation about Indonesia, before breaking into two groups to learn how to play the Gamelan and Waltzing Matilda on the Angklung.

Staff and students were treated to some food and were very entertained by the consulate staff.

As part of our Student Voice initiative, we would like to recognise Felicite Blake, an inspiring English teacher who was nominated by one of her students.

“I would like to thank you for being my English teacher. You have really helped me with my English, and I got the highest mark I’ve ever gotten on my essay the other day. Thank you for helping me so much and answering the thousands of questions I ask. You’re a great teacher.”

Some of our students recently had the opportunity to use microscopes to examine the structure of flowers in their Science classes. This activity reinforced their studies on the types of cells that make up plants and animals as they were able to examine the structure of flowers and view the different cell types that make up a plant’s reproductive organs.

Last Thursday our Year 7 Boys participated in an exhilarating AFL Carnival. After winning three straight games to reach the semi-finals, they clinched a thrilling victory by less than a goal and advanced to the Grand Final. Despite being down 27 points at halftime, their passion and teamwork fuelled an incredible comeback, ultimately securing a triumphant win!

Year 9 Food Technology students have spent the term designing their own “Mason Jar Meals”, an easily transported meal which covers a range of food groups.

The students’ designs were all personalised, with some opting for a sweet breakfast jar, and others going for a savoury lunch option.

Some students also took the time to create a personalised label for their jar too.

Students participating in this term’s Cultural Art and Craft academy classes have created a range of African inspired DIY projects, including earrings and hair scrunchies made from African fabrics.

This is just one of many fantastic afterschool academy classes currently in full swing at Aveley Secondary College that allow students to explore different areas of interest.
