To acknowledge National Sorry Day yesterday, Room 4 watched snippets of the Rabbit Proof Fence before creating bracelets using the colours of the Aboriginal flag. We discussed the significance of National Sorry Day for Indigenous Australians and what each colour of the flag represented.
Visual Arts
We have had a fantastic start to Term 2 in Visual Arts and Photography. The Year 8 students have been introduced to the artwork of Melski McVee and have started to create their own drawing portfolio sheets. The Year 9 Printmakers have been cutting their print blocks and printing their excellent Tarot card designs. Year 9 photographers influenced by the photographic work of Thensure Yang have explored structures and experimented with exposure and focus. We can not wait to see what the students create next.
Year 9 Food Creations
This term in our Year 9 Food Technology class, we are looking at the theme of “Good Food Fast”. The Year 9 students have been creating their own versions of popular foods to prove how easy it is to make their own at home. In Week 3 we looked at the process of creating bread and made our own rolls, scrolls and other shapes, which could be used to create burgers and more.
Year 7 Sewing
Our Year Sevens have been learning how to sew using both the hand technique and a sewing machine. For the last two weeks of the course, students combined these skills to design and create their very own Emoji Keychain. We have been very impressed by the Year Sevens enthusiasm for learning about textiles!
Room 4
The students in ESH Room 4 have been working hard to complete their ASDAN modules this semester. Some of the activities so far have included the following: taking care of the communal garden bed, completing household activities such as washing dishes, trialling new exercise equipment, identifying appropriate clothing for different occasions, reviewing various artwork, utilizing “Dash and Dot” robots to target fine motor skills, accessing the Google translate application to attempt phrases in new languages and engaging in the online “Kahoot” application.
Year 9 AFL and Basketball classes
As physical education classes slowly get back to normal, students have finally been able to get into the newly equipped fitness centre. Year 9 students enrolled in our AFL and Basketball courses have completed their first few sessions in the fitness centre, all of the students were excited and privileged to be the first to be able to use the facility for their Physical Education classes. Our year 9 students will complete a 5-week strength and conditioning program as well as continuing to develop their skills in their respective sports.

ESH Gardening Program
In Room 6 ESH we have implemented a gardening program. Throughout Term 1 the students have participated in planting, watering and maintaining the Aveley ESH Veggie Garden. So far we have raised $36.85 from selling the vegetables produced allowing us to continue the program through Term 2. Each week the students are responsible for measuring their plant growth, recording it in their Plant Journal and estimating the height for the next week. We have just finished planting our new crops for Term 2!
Year 7 Science
Our year 7 Science students have been learning about the water cycle this term and how it impacts WA’s management of water. Students experimented how the water cycle works, by placing a bag of coloured water on the window, observing how the water had evaporated, condensed and dropped back to the bottom, demonstrating stages of the water cycle. WATER a great experiment!
