Miss Leaver’s Year 9 Textiles class have been exploring fabric treatment this term. When deciding a medium to apply dye to, the students were interested in creating pillow cases to match with their own pyjama garment that they created last term. The students researched fabric treatment techniques and constructed the pillow, before customising their design with their chosen tie dye technique.

Year 7 Textiles
In Home Economics the newest group of Year 7’s have started the trimester with a practical activity. Each student is creating their very own customised iPad Case to use for the BYOD program at the college. Our students spent two weeks developing their sewing machine skills before beginning their iPad cases. Every student is showing our mutual agreement of perseverance during the construction process.
Year 9 and 10 Subject Selections
The link to our online form for our Year 9 and 10 Subject Selections has now been emailed to families. This is an exciting time for our students where they get to pick subjects around their interests, strengths or intended pathways. It is also a special year as it will mark the opening of our second stage buildings, which include exceptional Arts facilities.
2020 Student Leaders
We would like to introduce some of our fabulous student leaders for 2020. They will act as the Aveley Secondary College student voice, putting forward ideas, concerns and causes on behalf of our student cohorts including assisting with fundraising projects. Our student leaders have already started to brain storm some innovative ideas to meet our students social and emotional needs through home room and lunchtime activities. A new initiative for 2020 is our year 9 student leaders mentor program; where they will lead and offer guidance to our year 7 and 8 student leaders. Thank you to Mr Wheeler for helping to coordinate our student leaders.
World War 1 Studies
Some of our Year 9 students are loving learning all about World War One in their HASS classes. They have been working on developing their source analysis skills, and are becoming experts at annotating symbols and messages in propaganda posters. They are learning so much about the factors that influenced young men to enlist in the war. We are all looking forward to learning about the triumphs and tragedies of WW1 that will follow in the coming weeks.
Year 9 Photography
We would like to share some examples of the excellent photographic work our Year 9 students are producing. Students have explored exposure, focus and composition experimenting with shallow depth of field in and out of college.
Sport Elite Pilot Program

Year 8 Historians
Our Year 8 students in HaSS this term have officially become historians i.e. people who study history. Students are learning about medieval history, with the focus in week 3 being medieval castles. After learning about the continuity and change of medieval castle designs, students applied their critical and creative thinking skills to build their masterpiece medieval castles on “Minecraft for Education”. Students setup servers in teams on their iPads to work together to construct their castles. These medieval castle designs featured feudal villages, moats, fortified walls, watch towers and draw bridges. It was great seeing the students working collaboratively, creatively, and excitedly while linking a game they love with a subject they are interested in.
In term one Mrs Preston ran an Academy on Medieval Castles. The HaSS team are looking forward to running more Academies that students love when they resume again in term 3.
HASS Archaeology Lesson
In some of our HASS lessons this term our year 7’s had great fun digging up dinosaur fossils and gemstones during an excavation activity after learning about archaeology.
