We are very proud of Year 9 student Brodie Martin for organising and playing a full 30 minute Nirvana Tribute concert before school for an enthralled audience. Brodie’s passion for live music is inspiring. Thank you to our Youth Workers for all their hard work supporting this wonderful concert.
Soccer Competitions
The Soccer competitions are well underway, with our Intermediate Boys and Junior Girls recording impressive wins. The boys had a comfortable 3-1 win over Ballajura and the girls had a hard-fought 4-3 win over Morley. Both teams are now sitting at 1 win and 1 loss with a few games to play. Good luck to Ms Donovan, Mr Imrie and both teams for the rest of the competition.
Purposeful Career Management
Students in our Year 10 Purposeful Career Management class have been enthusiastically developing their career skills, including mastering the art of writing successful resumes and cover letters. Interested students in Year 7-10 are also taking advantage of the career skill development opportunities in the Career Skills Academy. Many of the students have used these skills in real world contexts to apply for and gain part time employment. Congratulations to these students and Mr Coveney for his work in developing our careers program.

BYOD in Action
At Aveley Secondary College we believe building teaching digital literacy skills to be important across the whole curriculum. Our BYOD program (bring your own device) ensures that teaching programs can use technology in the classroom to enrich the learning experience.
Some of the wonderful ways teachers are incorporating BYOD into the curriculum include Mathematics teachers creating virtual quizzes that tap into students’ competitive sides as they race to show off their mathematical knowledge. Food Technology students create instructional videos showcasing their cooking talents by working in groups to prepare a recipe, film each step and edit the final production. Media students record and edit their films using their iPads and students even use Minecraft to model historic buildings and economic flow diagrams in HASS!
We love to see the varied ways our students can use technology to enhance their knowledge.
New Staff: Meg McKinnon
Introducing Meg McKinnon who has joined our Physical Education Team. Meg comes with a wealth of experience, which will be a great support for our netball classes and teams. We are excited to have her join us.
Hello, my name is Meg and I will be working in the Health and Physical Education Department.
It’s so lovely to begin at Aveley this term and be welcomed by so many bright smiles. I am really looking forward to experiencing the good things I’ve heard about our students and can’t wait to make my mark. I have played, coached and umpired netball for 18 years and am looking forward to expanding the skills of our Netball students in Semester Two. If you see me around, stop me and say hello.
New Staff: Elena Bollweg
Welcoming the latest addition to our amazing Arts team. Elena has a background as a practicing textiles artist and has overseen specialist Visual Art programs. Her experience and skills will be a great asset and we are excited to have her join us.
Hi everyone, my name is Elena Bollweg and it is my pleasure to be joining Aveley Secondary College at the start of Term 2, 2021 as a teacher of Visual Arts and Media.
My background in the Arts includes working in the fashion industry prior to teaching, and exhibiting artwork at local Perth galleries including Nyisztor Studio and Kent Street Gallery. A highlight of my creative practice has been being awarded the opportunity to travel to Japan to design and produce a bespoke textile which I later used to create a capsule collection of garments that were exhibited at the Western Australian Museum in 2015.
During the study of my first degree, I also worked as a swimming teacher for many years and most recently I completed a 12 month role as the Coordinator of a Gifted and Talented Visual Arts Program at my previous school.
My passion for the Arts and working with young people has led me to become a secondary teacher and I am always excited to show my students how fulfilling the arts can be to engage with. I look forward to sharing my experiences with the students at Aveley and creating some beautiful works of art, film and photography.
AFL Eagles Boys School Cup
Our Year 8 and 9 boys played their first game yesterday in the AFL Eagles Boys School Cup with a great win. Final score ESC 2.0 12 ASC 8.9 57.
The squad is run by Mr Turner who has been able to use his WAFL experience to inspire our students.
Some great individual and overall team effort, a couple highlights were Luwayne’s mark on the wing, B.K and Brock leading from the front playing an overall great game. A lot of non football players stepping out of their comfort zone and playing their role on the team which lead to us to the win.
Student Voice Nomination: Sean Sandy
As part of our student voice initiative, twice a year our students are offered the chance to acknowledge the exceptional efforts and commitment of our staff. We are selecting two each round to share with our school community. The first of these is for one of our amazing Math teachers Mr Sandy, whose dedication and passion are an asset to our school.
“For his clear dedication to students as people and not numbers. Mr Sandy understands the mentality of his students and works with them in ways I haven’t seen others do, even to the point of showing his notes from school and displaying student recommended videos during breaks. He treats students as individuals, answering any questions they have.”
