Harmony Day, held Monday 21 March, celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. Harmony Day celebrates inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background. We’re proud of our diversity with over 40 countries represented in our staff and student body. Students are encouraged to wear orange accessories to celebrate Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations, the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
Interschool Swimming
On Monday 14 March our team of 22 Swimmers entered the Interschool Swimming Carnival at Challenge Stadium. Our competition was combined with a higher division which set the bar high. Our early results on the day had us challenging a place, and we finished with a respectable 5th place. We were extremely pleased with the commitment on the day and the camaraderie we saw from our students.
A special mention goes out to our Freestyle swimmers: Austin Fort (Year 10) who placed first, Molly Van Namen and Eddie White (Year 7) who came second and Curtis Datson and Zakary Bell (Year 7) who came third.
Big mention to Ava Smith (Year 9) who was Runner-Up Champion Girl overall. We are proud of each one of our competitors and have already enrolled to compete again next year.
An error was made in our latest newsletter that stated the incorrect Year 7 Champions for our Swimming Carnival. Harry Day and Jade Barbeau were the champions on the day. Well done to them both!

I am eager to pass on my experience, knowledge and passion for Health and Physical Education to those I teach. My sport of choice is netball and gridiron, but I enjoy all sports and an active lifestyle. I look forward to settling in and getting to know the Aveley Secondary College community.
Student Achievements
Congratulations to Year 11 students Jake Murdock and Mason Beaver for their recent wins in the Vanguards Junior Muay Thai competition. They are both very accomplished and we are proud of the responsibility, perseverance and commitment to their sport. Both Jake and Mason also mentor younger students in the sport to help their achieve their dreams. We wish Jake luck in his upcoming competition in April.
New Staff: Janelle Connor
Welcome to Janelle Connor, who is joining our HASS department. Janelle is a dynamic new teacher with global experience that she uses to engage students in their learning. We are delighted to have Janelle join our Humanities team.
I’m excited to join the HASS team here at Aveley SC, especially after spending time as a relief teacher at the College last year. My passion for Humanities grew in my own secondary education and I spent years leading tours and outdoor education expeditions for secondary students around the world. This included visiting more than 100 countries, every continent and following some historically significant overland routes such as the Silk Road. I’m looking forward to teaching both Humanities and Social Sciences and Careers and Enterprise to our students this term.

Hello I am Jackie and I look forward to enthusiastically bringing my diverse culinary skills acquired through previous years as a chef in executive establishments to our students here at Aveley. I also spent eight years as a small business owner and wedding cake designer. I try to always bring a cheerful presence to each class and promote student engagement.
Together with the professional Home Economics teaching staff, I hope to ensure the level of student education will be unlike any other.

Introducing Teneal Kounitis, a dynamic young teacher joining our Education Support department.
Hi, my name is Teneal Kounitis. I’m a second year Graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education, with a Specialisation in Special Needs Education. I’m very excited to be starting at Aveley Secondary this year in the Education Support Hub. I previously taught at an Education Support Centre last year, teaching Year 11/12s.
I’m very passionate about what I do and love to watch students achieve their goals and reach their potential. I very much enjoy working in the disability sector, this will be my sixth year. I am looking forward to getting to know the staff and students at Aveley Secondary and to get involved in this wonderful community.
New Staff: Naomi Higgs
We are very happy to introduce Naomi Higgs, who will be joining our Science department here at ASC.
I’ve joined the Science team at Aveley after working as a relief teacher in Term 4 last year. I recently graduated from ECU after previously working in the construction industry. I have always been enthralled by nature and on the weekends I’ll be out in the bush. I’m excited to pass on this passion to my students so they can hopefully one day contribute to preserving the wonderful landscapes we are so lucky to be able to enjoy in Perth. I love it when students come to say hi and share their weirdest Science fact with me!
New Staff: Melanie Tarr
We are so excited to introduce Melanie Tarr who is joining us as our new Digital Technologies teacher. Melanie comes to us with outstanding credentials and will be an asset to our technologies team.
“I come to Aveley to join the already exceptional computer science program that has been established.
In 2012 I produced the world’s first iPhone app written by high schoolers at a WA under privileged school. During my PhD I worked in eight WA schools to understand the best way to teach adolescents programming. I am a PhD examiner for the school of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Curtin and I began my career at ECU in my 20s being the first female employed as a support engineer in the Cyber Security department.
Students in my middle school Technologies classes receive tuition from myself and lectures from Computer Science staff at University while my senior school students enjoy learning how to market themselves as entrepreneurs through design and technology. The senior Applied Information Technology students also study technical systems for their own businesses as well as software design.
I look forward to getting to know the Aveley SC community.”
