At ASC we love when our music students put on a lunchtime performance, delighting staff and students in the vicinity. Music Memories and Battle of the Bands students celebrated the end of Term 2 with a musical performance so exciting even Mr Imrie joined in! The subject should really be called Supportive Bands not Battle of the Bands because all the students work so well with each other to set up, encourage and perform. Great job rock stars!
Student Spotlight: Aila Flood-Kiddie
Aveley Secondary College is proud to announce that Sports Elite student Aila Flood-Kiddie has been accepted into the 2022 SSWA 12s Netball team! Over 400 players tried out and she was one of 15 selected for the state team.
This is the second time Aila has been selected but due to COVID the team was unable to travel last year. Aila loves Netball and would like a career in sport, she has been playing since she was in Year 2 and will be putting her years of training and hard work in the Sports Elite Program into action playing Goal Defence in Sydney for a week long carnival in September.
We wish her the best of luck and know she will do our school proud.
Cyber Security Excursion
Aveley’s Year 10 Cyber Security students visited ECU Joondalup to enrich and extend their learning in computer security. This took place in beautiful high tech laboratories adjacent to the lake at Joondalup campus.
The students began their day by completing Digital Forensic activities where they had to track and analyse user log data to find suspicious activity. They then learnt about Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), which is the practice of collecting information from published or otherwise publicly available resources. In this OSINT task, the students were able to analyse images and track down exactly where they were taken from.
Our students also learnt about cyber stalking, spying, counter-terrorism, phishing and scamming, ethical hacking as well as how to protect their online identity. They were also privileged with the opportunity to listen to an ex-NASA employee about the possibilities of STEM careers. Finally, the students visited a Security Operations Lab and were able to observe how it functions in day-to-day operations across all three campuses of ECU.
We received over $500 worth of robotics equipment including MicroBits which classes have already started using. We are very grateful for this equipment.
Student Voice: Tanja Mitkovski
The third student voice nomination we would like to share for this round is for Ms Mitkovski. She is an amazing HASS teacher and doing great work inspiring our students.
“I would like to thank you for being my HASS teacher. I love how you always make the class laugh and have fun even when we are learning. You have helped me learn so much. You have helped me learn to like Geography and I still remember everything I have learnt from you. Thank you!”
Dance Performance
What an amazing performance and celebration of Dance by our very talented Year 9, 10 and 11 Dance students! Routines were inspired by a range of influences including Bollywood, Hip Hop and Contemporary.
Dance students performed group choreography and their own student devised routines to a live audience of students and staff in our Performing Arts Theatre.
Mrs Stone and Mrs Liddle “are so very proud of what the students have created and the commitment and effort they showed. The students were buzzing afterwards and really loved the experience, which for a lot of them was their first time performing live!”
Thank you to Mr Lang, who created a fantastic lighting routine, and Mr Chin, for the photography. We are so proud of all the students and Arts staff who made this happen!

Students return Tuesday 19 July.
Student Voice: Cameron Pilapil
The second student voice nomination we would like to share for this round is for Mr Pilapil. He is an amazing Technologies teacher who is committed to supporting his students, often running two or three Academies as well as his regular classes.
“I would like to thank you because you have helped me understand when I was struggling, you taught me how to be a better person and you made me laugh when I was having a bad day.”
Year 9 Lightning Carnival
On Wednesday 22 June, 80 Year 9 students attended the Lightning Carnival for Netball, Volleyball, Soccer and Basketball. The day is designed for all students to be able to participate and build their skills with their peers. The Soccer team enjoyed a friendly win. Our Volleyball students learnt many new skills they will take into their PE classes. Our Netball girls took on the challenge and won most of their games. Our Basketball students showed true sportsmanship and team leadership.
It was a fabulous day and the students represented the school exceptionally. Well done students and staff, we look forward to future events.
NCCD Collection
Our school is part of a national project about students with disability and or learning difficulties, called the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD). We have been asked to provide data about the number and types of learning needs of students at our school. As part of the collected data, individual students and schools are not identified.
The project aims to collect information about differing student needs. It also looks at the levels of intervention in place such as the programs and resources the school has utilised so that students can overcome barriers, participate and learn. We believe it is important to contribute to this project because it will help inform Government and the Education Department about level of resources needed in schools.
Instrumental Students
Recently the Instrumental students visited the Perth Concert Hall to see the renowned conductor Asher Fisch work with the WA Symphony Orchestra. Students were able to see the second violins make lots of mistakes in Bruckner’s Third Symphony and how the conductor uses singing and arm waving to get them to perform his vision cohesively as a group.
Inspired by their visit, our students were keen to try this conducting job for themselves. Students combined the two growing ensembles and worked together to learn the elements of music and conducting in a fun practical way. It’s been a pleasure to watch these musicians become more confident and ambitious over the semester and we are looking forward to watching them perform in Term 3 and 4.
