Our Year 7 Home Economics classes have completed their breakfast task. They were asked to investigate different healthy breakfast recipes, using ingredients from the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, to create their meal. Well done Year 7, the meals look delicious!
Year 6 Orientation
Over the last two days we have welcomed incoming Year 6s for their orientation. Students have explored the opportunities high school presents including making wooden boats in D&T, whizzing up chocolate milkshakes in Home Economics, creating art inspired by the artist Keemo, and exploring a variety of sports in a challenging team game. Each day commenced with a tour of the College and finished with a lesson on the Aveley Way.
We are so pleased with the outstanding behaviour from our eager new students and look forward to getting to know them better next year. Special thanks to our student leaders who dedicated their time to making our new students comfortable.
Career Tasters
On Monday of Week 5, 60 Year 9 students explored various career pathways at Murdoch University. After a presentation on careers and pathway exploration students rotated through activities in Forensics, Marine Biology and Wildlife Conservation. They spent each session with a student ambassador studying in that field, with each ambassador sharing their pathway to finding their career passion, sharing how they overcame any hurdles along the way.
Activities included students designing some clever and effective artificial habitats for threatened species, playing “forensics” Guess Who? and some (very) entertaining rounds of Shark vs. Stingray. Murdoch University staff and student ambassadors commended our students for their behaviour, engagement and thoughtful questions. Many thanks to Mr Anthony and Mr Broderick who offered their time and support in running the excursion.
Student Spotlight: Olivia
We would like to wish Year 9 student Olivia, the best of luck in the upcoming Australian All-star Cheer and Dance National Competition where she will compete in the Open Elite and Junior Hip Hop, Jazz and Lyrical divisions.
Olivia trains four night a week and loves the spirit of the All Star competitions, where all abilities are celebrated in an inclusive environment. In 2020 her team won the chance to compete at the World Dance Championships in Florida USA but due to COVID-19 they were unable to travel. Her perseverance and dedication to continuous improvement makes her school proud and we know you will join with us in wishing her well.
Master Chef
16 Year 7 & 8 future chefs showed off their culinary skills last week during the first round of the House Master Chef Competition. After a delicious round of breakfast treats enjoyed by our staff judges, Tammar is currently in the lead, but who will take out the Master Chef trophy after the Year 9 and 10s have cooked today?
The Technologies Department created the event to provide innovative ways to increase student participation in school-based learning and encourage students to consider the Hospitality course offered by the College. A special thank you goes to Mrs Pineda for organising the event and scouting for future Master Chefs.
Lego League
The Lego League is at Aveley SC as we host teams of students from all over Perth engaged in the Robot Challenge to build and program a LEGO robot that completes missions on a field. The gym is full of energy as students collaborate in a fun-filled competition.
Student Spotlight – Mia Rose Lake
We wish Year 8 student, Mia Rose Lake, the best of luck representing the Perth Redstar U16s team in the SingaCup. Mia loves playing football because it is fun and she loves her team, she is so grateful for the chance to play overseas. This is a fantastic opportunity for Mia to put the skills she has developed in the Sports Elite Program and in her external sporting commitments to the test, and we know she will display the College values of excellence and integrity. Good luck in Singapore Mia!
Student Voice – Miss Konomba
The second student voice nomination we would like to share for this round is for Miss Konomba, one of our wonderful Science teachers who received some very thoughtful nominations.
“Thank you for all the support you have given me these past two years. You were an amazing home room teacher and I am so grateful for everything you did to help me change. You are so kind and generous and I love being in your class as you are an awesome teacher. You’ve really help me improve my grade and before this year I’ve never gotten marks so high in Science.”
Year 7 Lightning Carnival
On Friday 28 October over 150 Year 7s attended their Lightning Carnival for netball, AFL, soccer and basketball. Our netball team came away with two champion places, one runner-up place and one third place. The soccer teams placed second and third in their division. Our basketball teams finished the day on two wins and enjoyed learning how to work as a team. Our AFL team gave their very best, with many students showing promising leadership qualities. We look forward to participating in this event again next year.
Student Voice – Mr Mitchell
As part of our student voice initiative students are offered the chance to acknowledge the exceptional efforts and commitment of our staff. We had so many wonderful nominations this Semester that it was very difficult to pick just three staff appreciation nominations to highlight. The first staff member we would like to recognise is Mr Mitchell. He is an amazing English teacher who is committed to supporting his students.
“I would like to thank you for being a bright and funny teacher that teaches well and makes class more enjoyable. You have helped me improve on my writing and a lot of things that I found hard last year. I feel as if I’ve improved a lot in English and I’m happy with how much you’ve helped me. Thanks for being an awesome teacher.”
