We are very excited and proud to announce this year’s Arts and Technology showcase… FUSION!!!!

Join us on Wednesday 21 June from 4.00pm to 7.00pm for an afternoon of creativity, innovation and design.

The Arts and Technology studios and workshops will be open for you to visit and try your hand at a wide range of workshops whilst our wonderful students showcase their skills. Staff will be on hand to discuss courses, subject selection queries and to share our wonderful facilities with you.

We are looking forward to showcasing our arts studios, media labs, green screen audio visual recording studios, performing arts theatre, commercial kitchen and barista areas, food labs, wood and metal workshops, construction area and IT labs.

Our third Student Voice nomination this Semester is for David Sharp, our Head of English. Mr Sharp is a fantastic team leader who not only encourages our students to do their best but also gets the best out of his staff. We are so pleased to share one of the many wonderful nominations he received.

“Thank you Mr Sharp for being my English teacher. I’ve sat through your lessons every year of my high school life other than Year 9, and you continue to expand my knowledge every day and support my learning. You help me with one of the most important subjects in this school and explain some of the most difficult topics with ease and are able to support us all, you always put your students first so thank you. I hope you can continue to support me until my graduation. Thank you Mr Sharp.”

The Year 7 and 9 Sports Elite cohorts were taken through team building and ropes activities by Teamworks Development Australia. The Year 7s completed team building games before testing their nerves climbing up a pylon before trying to jump and hold onto a swinging bar. They then continued to build teamwork skills on the low ropes course.

Meanwhile, the Year 9s were working in groups of three as they learned the safety procedures of belaying for each other. Later in the day the Year 9s got to test their teamwork skills by tackling the high ropes course. It was encouraging to see some individuals develop their confidence and finish off the day by completing the high ropes course.

On Thursday 25 May, our 7/8 AFL girls were eager to compete against other schools for the highly coveted championship title. The day was full of laughter, cheers and team work. From the first whistle, it was clear the girls had come to win, showcasing their practiced skills and impressing their teachers. We congratulate the girls on their fabulous effort.

The second Student Voice nomination we would like to recognise this Semester is for Mitchell Hattie. Dr Hattie is a fantastic Maths teacher who makes a daily impact of his student’s lives. We are so pleased that his students appreciate how much he does for their education and wellbeing, one student recognised that:

“Dr Hattie has helped me by explaining concepts to a way I understand. This has improved my interest in Maths and I appreciate the work he puts in for our class. By pushing us to our full potential we learn more effectively, this helps not only me but a great amount of the students. Thank you.”

As part of our Student Voice initiative students are offered the chance to acknowledge the exceptional efforts and commitment our staff put in to supporting their education and wellbeing. We were positively overwhelmed by the thoughtful and considerate responses we received this Semester and we will be highlighting several of them this term.

First up is Jesse Turner, one of our amazing Physical Education teachers who received an outstanding amount of nominations. One student nominated Mr Turner for:

“always checking in on students after learning new topics in class or if someone missed a lesson he’d make sure to go over it with them, instead of telling them to just look at the slides. If you do not understand a topic or a practical skill he’ll help you and change his way of teaching until you do. Once you improve from where you were with that skill or even achieve it he is very encouraging and uplifting. As one would say an ‘inspirational’ teacher to his past and present students. He is always determined to reach his own goals and also helping others to reach their own.”

Today the diversity of the African Culture was showcased at Aveley SC as we celebrated African Unity Day. Students were delighted by the wonderful display of African dancing and were able to try their hand at the drums, make beaded jewellery or learn about African countries including trying to identify the different flags. The atmosphere provided a sense of self-confidence, showcased individual dynamics, self-expression and collaboration.

African Unity Day, also known as Africa day, is celebrated annually on May 25. It commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963.

Year 8 and 10 Sports Elite students had the opportunity to learn some new skills and test their strength at the Ninja Academy. The instructor guided them through some skills and then students had the chance to practice before competing in the inaugural Aveley Secondary College Ninja Warrior competition! A Year 8 boys team ended up taking the title in the grand final, congratulations!

The City of Swan has advised that as part of the current road works on The Broadway there will be several temporary road closures that may affect traffic around the College. In addition to the current closure on Voyager Link that will finish 23 May, Bordeaux Lane will also be closed from 22 May until 17 June. Voyager Link will close again from 19 June to 1 July. Due to the ongoing roadworks the bus stop #25898 has been relocated to the West of Maffina Parade to facilitate safety of the children and pedestrians.

We wish to remind our community to please drive carefully around the College and the roadworks. Please also remind your children to be careful when crossing the road, as we want everyone to go home safe and sound each day.

Our Aveley Super Creators (ASC – Year 10 Education Support ASDAN group) have once again held a successful Mother’s Day stall where they sold hand-made products such as bath salts, pamper packs, key rings and homemade cards to Education Support students and eager staff. ASDAN is an important education program for our Education Support students. As part of this, the Work Awareness Enterprise project develops key employability skills including communication, teamwork, organisation and numeracy skills in a workplace environment. Many thanks to parents who supported the program by sending in money with their children to buy gifts. We hope you loved your child’s selection as much as they loved shopping for you.
