Year 7 HaSS classes have been exploring Ancient Rome so thoroughly that they caught the attention of resident gladiator Udious Maximus. Not content with just ROME-ing the halls, he also challenged each class to an Ancient Rome pop quiz, inspiring students to use their recently learned knowledge or face The Colosseum!
New Staff: Shaina Farrell
We are pleased to introduce Shaina Farrell, who has joined our English department. Shaina’s passion for the written word is a welcome addition to our teaching staff and we are pleased to have her on board.
Hi everyone! My name is Shaina Farrell and I have joined the English team in 2023. I am in my eighth year of teaching; having previously taught at Eastern Hills. I was lucky to have teachers in my formative years that instilled in me a love of learning and reading. My favourite author is Edgar Allan Poe, favourite genre is historical fiction, and I am a sucker for all things Harry Potter. I have received a very warm welcome so far by the Aveley Secondary College community and am excited for the year ahead.
Houses
Students are allocated a House and Homeroom upon enrolment. The House system aims to encourage interest in school activities through healthy, positive competition between Houses. We also aim to recognise a range a student behaviours addressing out mutual agreements of Appreciation, Perseverance, Respect and Responsibility through the use of House points.
Each House has a staff leader, two student leaders and a mascot image named after endangered animals from the nearby Whiteman Park.
Ellenbrook Falcons
The Ellenbrook Falcons Hockey Club treated our Year 7 students to a taste of hockey, teaching students the correct way to hold the stick and how to dribble and pass the ball safely and accurately. Everyone was keen to give it a go and focused on trying their best, even some of our older students had a go! Thank you Ellenbrook Falcons Hockey Club.
Punctuality
Did you know? School attendance and arriving on time have a direct impact on students’ education. Students arriving late to class interrupts the teaching and learning program for not only these students, but for the teacher and the rest of the class.
Regular attendance and punctuality is an employability and life skill. Our focus is on developing the whole child and having high standards so that each child can reach their potential. Being on time maximises educational outcomes and prevents distractions for the whole class.
Swimming Carnival
The water for our Swimming Carnival may have been cold but the competition and fun was red hot. Well done to Mr Trotman and the HPE team for putting on a such a successful event. We were very proud of all our students for such wonderful participation levels and making it such a close competition on the day. Congratulations to Tammar on an excellent showing this year!
Sports Elite Camp
The Sports Elite camp ran from Friday through to Saturday with the aim of building camaraderie across the years. The camp started with team building activities and it was highly competitive when the Year 7, 8 , 8 and 10 cohorts competed against each other. We then went to Outback Splash which was lovely and quiet so we pretty much had the slides to ourselves! In the evening we headed back to school for more sports and the Year 10s did a great job working together to cook the BBQ for everyone. Finally, we finished off on Saturday morning with a whole camp workout and some time for students to reflect on their goals for Sport Elite in the year ahead. Bring on 2023!
New Staff: Rachael Coxon
We have several new faces in our Corporate Services team this year, we would like to welcome Rachael Coxon who has taken over the very busy role of Middle School Student Services and Year 7-9 Enrolments. Rachael has been doing an amazing job and we are very lucky to have her.
Hello, my name is Rachael Coxon and I’m very excited to be working at Aveley Secondary College in the Student Services area, I have previously come from a banking background and I look forward to getting to know all the students who I meet at this wonderful school.
Valentine’s Baking
To spread the love this Valentine’s Day, our Year 11 and 12 Certificate II Hospitality students made a collection of love themed biscuits while developing their baking and piping skills. The students are busy preparing for the reopening of our before school café next week!
Aspire Awards Presentation
Last week, the Senior School team held the inaugural Aspire Awards Presentation.
This event recognised our students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement throughout Year 11 and were presented for Academic, Community or Performance successes. We were also treated to the delights of a performance by our school rock band, The Sirens, and catering by the amazing Certificate II Hospitality students. It was a fantastic way to start our year and we look forward to being a part of their future successes.
