As the Year 12 Hospitality classes prepare to finish their Certificate II course, they have worked together to start a new business venture! On Monday and Tuesday afternoons, each class has been busy in the kitchen preparing a range of take home meals available for purchase by staff. Our first week served up Spaghetti Bolognaise and Butter Chicken, along with varying versions of these recipes to suit our staff with certain dietary requirements. Thank you to our staff for supporting our students.
NAIDOC
Last week we were very excited to celebrate NAIDOC. A number of experiences and cultural activities were organised by Paige Smith AIEO and supported by our student services and homeroom teachers. This year’s theme was “For our Elders – Our Elders paved the pathways for us, taught us our knowledge, our history, they passed down their art, stories and wisdom.”
Students in homerooms helped to create a Sea of Hands, other students assisted Ms Smith to create a sand mural. During lunch on Friday students were able to explore the Aboriginal culture through tasting samples of emu, crocodile, camel, kangaroo and damper which was prepared by Patrick and Glenice Smith.
Binar Futures Dance put on an incredibly moving dance, exploring different animals and a dreamtime story with didgeridoo music. Students also contributed to a large painting, made bracelets and explored an information booth.
School 2 Stage Dance Competition
Our Dance squad students performed at the School to Stage Dance competition over the weekend. Students completed a routine in the Jazz genre and showed amazing enthusiasm, professionalism and showmanship at the event itself. Year 11 students Jade, Kendra and Emily also performed in a Group Choreography section and really held their own in the space. The College is so proud of their accomplishments over the weekend and Ms Liddle is pleased to continue working with our students to develop and polish their routines for future performances.
New Staff: Tracey Howard
We would like to introduce a new face in our Corporate Services Team. Tracey Howard has joined us in our HR Support role and is a friendly face in the front office. Welcome to the team Tracey!
I’m Tracey and I am pleased to have joined the Corporate Services Team at Aveley Secondary College. I have been working with the Department of Education for the past 6 years focusing on planning and co-ordinating swimming programs for Pre Primary to Year 7 students. I look forward to my future endeavours here at Aveley SC and I am very excited to be working alongside a great team of people whilst learning new skills along the way.

Staff Spotlight: Gemma Bailey
A huge congratulations to HPE teacher and Year 8 Coordinator Gemma Bailey. Gemma is captain of the A Grade women’s team at Kingsley Football Club and was recently selected in the Perth Football League Women’s State Team. The team flew to Melbourne to play against Victoria and we are proud of her drive and commitment to her sport and our students. We know that they greatly benefit from her sporting prowess, perseverance and dedication to excellence. Congratulations Gemma!
Employment Pools
Aveley Secondary College is running a number of pools for Student Services, English, HASS, D&T and Science positions coming up now, or for early start in 2024.
We are looking for teachers who are team players and want to make a difference for students. Aveley SC has been very involved in the Fogarty EdVance program and was acknowledged by the Grattan Institute for work in collaborative learning area resources. We have high level coaching and a teacher development focus, supported by our high performing PLCs. These pools are currently advertised on www.jobs.wa.gov.au – keyword search Aveley.
Bus Stop Changes
The City of Swan have advised that, due to ongoing roadworks in the area, the bus stops on Broadway have been temporarily moved until 15 September 2023. Please continue to drive, ride or walk safely around these areas and be conscious of other road users.
Hospitality Assessment
Hospitality students prepared and served morning tea at a recent staff function, with their skills assessed by an outside examiner, in order to achieve competency in their Certificate.
Staff were greatly impressed by their professionalism and service skills as they showcased what they have learnt! The food was delicious and high-quality, reflecting the fabulous teaching from our Home Economics department.
Student Spotlight – Kaitlyn Buckley
We would like to congratulate Year 8 student Kaitlyn Buckley on her recent success at the WA Invitational Taekwondo Championship. Kaitlyn received a gold medal in the Sparring Event Under 15 Division and a silver medal in the Poomsae Event.
Kaitlyn showed true courage and determination in the competition, and both her school and SMART Martial Arts are very proud of her achievement. Kaitlyn is currently training hard in preparation for the coming State and National Championship to be held later this year. We wish her the best of luck.
