Year 11 ATAR Geography students recently completed a field trip to the Perth Hills Discovery Centre near Mundaring to study the risks and impacts of bushfires. The students braved unseasonably warm weather to complete fieldwork activities such as mapping, field sketching, and measuring slope gradients and fuel loads. The excursion was hosted by the Department of Conservation, Biodiversity, and Attractions and allowed students to develop practical geographical skills to complement their classroom learning.
New staff: Ash Sinclair
We are excited to welcome Ash Sinclair to our Humanities and Social Sciences department at Aveley Secondary College. We are excited to see the invaluable insights and expertise Ash will bring to our students and community.
Hello my name is Ash Sinclair and one of my core motivations for teaching humanities is my genuine interest in understanding the complex interplay between history, economics, political science and Enlightenment philosophy. I hold qualifications in accounting and have completed the Education Department’s LEAP program and I am passionate about sharing my knowledge, empowering the next generation to pursue their passions. I have a wealth of experience as a music coordinator and small business owner, that I hope will bring a unique perspective to my classroom.
New Staff: Jacinta Eliot and Abbey Jensen
This year we have been fortunate to hire two fabulous School Psychologists to support our students. We are so pleased to introduce Jacinta Eliot and Abbey Jensen.
Hi everyone, my name is Jacinta Eliot, and I am one of the new School Psychologists at Aveley Secondary College for 2023! I have worked in a number of different roles and settings, including a drug and alcohol educator/ counsellor and crisis support work, so safe to say I’ve seen and heard most things! Before joining Aveley, I spent a year working in private practice however I have always wanted to work as a School Psych. My own high school experience played a big role in my decision to pursue psychology, so it is exciting to be back in this environment! My approach to being a psych is collaborative, and I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. I will be working as a team with the students, the school and the parents to meet their specific needs and the goals. I love working with young people and pride myself on being empathetic, open minded and non-judgmental, so please don’t be afraid to come say hey!
Hi, my name is Abbey Jensen I am a registered psychologist and I am very excited to be one half of the school psychology duo here at Aveley Secondary College. I have been working in primary schools in the Ellenbrook area for about 3 years, prior to that I worked as a private NDIS psychologist mainly with those with ASD and have also worked in an adolescent and young adult counselling role. I love working with students and hope to make their (often first) interaction with help seeking a positive experience. Outside of school I like spending time with and training my golden retriever who will hopefully be a certified therapy dog in the near future. I am looking forward to getting to know the students, teachers and community at Aveley Secondary College.
Student Spotlight: Kate Lister
Congratulations to Year 10 student Kate Lister who was recently awarded an Australian Golf Foundation Junior Girl Scholarship. As one of the first Junior Girls to ever receive this scholarship from The Vines Resort, Kate has been working really hard, spending most of her spare time down at the driving range. Kate is currently competing in the eight round Junior 9 Hole Autumn Series and we wish her the best of luck. We are very proud of Kate’s perseverance and look forward to seeing what she can accomplish in the future.
Year 12 Ball
On Saturday evening we celebrated Aveley Secondary College’s inaugural Year 12 Ball at Joondalup Resort. It was a fantastic evening which ran very smoothly thanks to a lot of help from many hands. Highlights from the evening included Mr Pestana lighting up the dance floor, the classy and tasteful attire of all of our students and the thousands of photos taken on the night by Bliss Studio.
We would like to give a massive thank you to all of Senior School for their help in making this event a success and all of the staff who attended on the night who went above and beyond to ensure all of the students had a great night.
Interschool Swimming Carnival
Last Monday, we entered our ASC swimming team into the SSWA Interschool Swimming Carnival. We placed second overall and were very proud of all our athletes. Many of our competitors achieved runner up champion or champion for their year, such a fantastic result!
Prepared Piano
Year 7-11 Instrumental and Certificate II Music students recently attended the very distinct, unique and beautiful sounds of a ‘prepared piano’. A prepared piano is a piano that has had its sounds temporarily altered by placing bolts, screws, mutes, rubber erasers, and/or other objects on or between the strings. The sounds were accompanied with a large 3D sculpture made of scaffolding rigs, that moved like a mobile and incorporated subtle but dramatic lighting effects. Performed by Australian percussionist, composer and sound artist Matthias Schack-Arnott, our students were very impressed by the Perth Concert Hall and performer alike.
New staff: Alex Lynch
Aveley Secondary College is so pleased to welcome Alex Lynch, a familiar face to many, to our Arts Department. Alex comes with a wealth of knowledge that will greatly benefit our students.
Hello Aveley community, my name is Alex Lynch. I loved working relief at Aveley last year and I’m very excited to have joined the Arts team full time this year. I have a Masters in Teaching with a major in Media and minor in Health and Physical Education. In my pre-teacher life I predominantly travelled. I lived in London, Sweden and spent five summers working at a summer camp in upstate New York. I loved working with youth in America and I’m so happy that I can now work with students in my hometown of Perth and combine that with my other passion, media! I am really looking forward to the year ahead and can’t wait to get to know more students and the community along the way.
