Dr Anna Golab, from ECU’s School of Business and Law, presented the ECU School of Business and Law Investment Award for 2023 to Cameron Gowing.

Cameron’s stocks profited approximately $2,200.00 over the course of the competition, which saw Year 10 students ‘investing’ in the stock market this term. While many students made a loss during a tough time for the economy, Cameron managed to select five stocks which all made a profit. Cameron’s ability to diversify his portfolio has paid off, as he received some fantastic prizes, including Apple AirPods thanks to ECU. Well done Cameron!

Aveley Secondary College ran an array of events on R U OK? DAY held on Thursday 14 September 2023. Events included, Homeroom R U OK? Day activities for Years 7-12, giant lawn games, spike ball, photo booth, music, volleyball, goal kicking, a free waffle quiz and free R U OK? Day wrist bands.

The aim of our day was to create fun, exciting and engaging activities that promoted teamwork, resilience, healthy minds and bodies and opportunities for young people within our community.

Thank you to all staff who helped create the day and to all staff and students who interacted with each other and of course asked the question; R U OK?

The Year 11 ATAR Geography class completed an excursion to the Swan Valley for their in-depth study on the reasons for, and impacts of, the consumption of tourism in the Swan Valley. Students completed field work at the Margaret River Chocolate Company and the Caversham Wildlife Park, which contributes to the completion of a Geographical Inquiry.

You may have noticed a new friendly face in our front office this term. We would like to welcome Avneet Bajwa to our excellent team of Corporate Service Officers, Avneet will be providing support to parents and students on our front desk, make sure to say hi!

Hi, I’m Avneet and I am pleased to have joined the Corporate Services Team at Aveley Secondary College. I have been working with the Department of Education as a Level 1 School Officer with Pre Primary to Year 6 students. I look forward to my future endeavours here at Aveley SC and I am very excited to be working alongside a great team of people whilst learning new skills along the way.

The top performing Year 8 Indonesian students were invited to attend an excursion to Monggo Restaurant in Mount Lawley. We were warmly welcomed by the head chef and his team who helped our students show off their cooking skills, teaching them how to make dadar gulung, a traditional Indonesian pancake with coconut filling. They described the pancake as sweet and delicious. Students then enjoyed a traditional Indonesian lunch of nasi kuning, ayam bakar, mie, and sayur. They were impressed by the presentation and flavourful food. Students were given a special treat by tasting one of Miss Booker’s favourite drinks: Es Cendol! It is a unique and sweet Indonesian drink made of coconut milk and palm sugar. It was a great cultural experience for the students, tasting and truly experiencing the food they had been practising discussing during their Warung dialogues.

Aveley Secondary College and the Instrumental Music School Services offers an Instrumental Music program which provides opportunities for students to develop musical skills, appreciation and expression. Year 7 2024 students are encouraged to apply for the program which offers voice/singing, guitar, saxophone and brass. Students already in the IMSS program in primary school need to apply to continue.

Congratulations to Year 10 Sports Elite student Liam Sullivan who recently competed in the Golf WA Secondary School Championship. Liam finished runner up for Year 10 with a 71 (1 over par) and as it was a Stableford competition finished on 38 points. Liam has been playing golf for five years and we congratulate him on his dedication and commitment to his sport. Well done Liam!

Last week we celebrated EA Appreciation Week with an afternoon tea. We have an amazing team of EAs at Aveley Secondary College who do a fantastic job supporting our students to achieve their best, every day. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts, last week we celebrated you, but we appreciate you every single day.

As the Year 12 Hospitality classes near the completion of their Certificate II course, students had requested to spend a week of lessons creating their own cakes. They had to write and submit a recipe and food order, had one hour to bake their cakes then one hour to decorate. Each cake showed their personalities and had their own quirks and creativity. We are very proud of our Hospitality classes and the progress they have shown over the course!

Congratulations to Year 10 student Cohen Treanor who recently competed in the CK Classic International Open in Kuala Lumpur. Cohen did an amazing job and successfully won a gold medal in his division. Well done Cohen!
