Another Student Voice nomination we would like to share for this round is for Ms Lazzara. She is an amazing English teacher and doing great work inspiring our students.

Today we welcomed our incoming students with our Year 6 orientation. It was a massive day for our new students where they were able to tour the school, make new friends, and try some of the subjects they will be doing next year.
Students created delicious choc-berry milkshakes in Home Economics, wooden boats and phone stands in Design and Technology, and designed colourful artworks in Art. They particularly enjoyed the tableau’s created in Drama, with students pretending to be in a playground, dog park or at the Eiffel tower whilst the other students tried to guess where they were. Science experiments encouraged an exploration of chemical reactions, magnets, and microscopes, and in Physical Education a game of multi-sports gave students a taste of our wonderful facilities. We finished the day with a brief lesson in a classroom setting to demonstrate our ASC values, agreements and expectations.
We look forward to welcoming them back next year.
Earlier this term we celebrated Year 8 student Jaken’s success in the first two rounds of the Australian BMX National Series.
Jaken recently competed in the BMX National Championships where he reached the semi-finals, making it to the top 8 to earn a National Series ranking. We applaud Jaken’s brilliant racing, commitment and perseverance and wish him luck for next year’s championships.
Our talented Year 10 student Brianna Pickett started playing darts only 2.5 years ago, and already holds the #1 ranking in the World Darts Federation Australian women’s under 18’s division. Brianna is not only ranked first in Australia, but is currently sitting at #8 is the world! She is travelling to Adelaide in January to compete in the Australian Junior Darts Championships. Good luck, Brianna!
Our rugby excursion to North Beach was an exciting day as we entered two teams into the carnival. One team was comprised of Year 8 and 9 students, while our other team consisted of Year 10s. The behaviour and teamwork displayed by our students was truly remarkable, and they should be commended for their sportsmanship. The most memorable moment of the day was when our two teams faced off against each other, with our Year 8/9 team securing the bragging rights. To top it off, our Year 8/9 team also finished in an impressive second place overall for the day, making it a fantastic outing for all involved.
We recently held trials for Year 7-9 students wanting to be part of the Sport Elite Program in 2024. The trials were a chance for the students to demonstrate their power, speed and agility. We saw Kereama S record our first sub 3.00 second 20 metre sprint time using the new timing gates!
The Sport Elite Program aims to develop the long-term physical development and leadership abilities of athletes at Aveley Secondary College. The next trials for current students will be Term 2 2024.

Hi my name is Rachel Thomson (Rachel the 3rd) and you will find me at Reception or Senior School. Some of you I have been fortunate to meet already with many more new faces to come, I’m sure. I have moved back down to Perth recently with my young family to spend more time with family and friends. We have spent a few years in the Pilbara and love getting out for adventures. I am enjoying meeting all the students, families, staff and visitors at Aveley Secondary College and look forward to seeing you soon!
Thank you so much to all the staff who have shown up for our Hospitality students all year, whether it be buying the occasional coffee, being a regular Brekky Burger purchaser, or taking advantage of the Year 12 Take Home Meal scheme, our students appreciate it beyond words!
Ms Leaver introduced the before-school café idea last year based off her previous school, where they would only ever get between 10 and 15 customers each morning… this year our students have been run off their feet with orders and it has given them such a fantastic insight into what life in Hospitality is like. We’ve had wonderful feedback from our RTO and have successfully gotten our first cohort of Year 12s through the course, which is only possible with your generosity and support.
This term the Sport Elite students attended a presentation about the career of Amber Merrit, a Paralympian who gained a silver medal in the 2012 London Paralympics. Amber shared about the challenges she has overcome as a wheelchair athlete and the Sport Elite students showed great interest, asking many questions.
After the talk from Amber, students had the opportunity to try wheelchair basketball for themselves. There was a great sense of appreciation of the skill that wheelchair basketball players have to be able to move on court as it was not as easy as they expected to control the chair and ball at the same time.
As part of their Certificate II in Building and Construction course Year 11 students attended a Skill Hire site to learn all about scaffolding. This course provided students with valuable training, including working at heights, a crucial skill for those looking to pursue a career in the field. Our Year 11 students engaged well for the whole day in this unique experience.
