Just a reminder for families holding a valid concession card that applications for the Secondary Assistance Scheme close at the end of Term 1 (28 March 2024). This is a fantastic scheme that can support families with some of the cost of your young person’s education, so if you qualify get your application in now so you don’t miss out! Forms can be completed at the front office and no late applications can be accepted.
Academic Elite Camp
The Year 7-9 Academic Elite Program students went for their inaugural camp in Dwellingup. This bush location served as the backdrop for a range of team-building and character-building activities. Students strategised and battled it out during archery tag, put their heads together to construct rafts that could float in a river, and embarked on a forest walk in the world’s only Jarrah forest to gain insights into invasive plant species.
A highlight for many was the night walk where they were not allowed any form of torches, glow sticks, or even the lights of their watches. With only the stars to guide them back to base camp, all six groups exhibited both courage and teamwork and found their way back! As the camp wrapped up after two days, the students left Dare Adventures with new friends, new skills, unforgettable experiences and memories to cherish!

I am a fresh Masters graduate from ECU and have been with the HPE department for my first prac and relief work soon after. My main goal as a starting teacher is to provide a culture where respect and resilience is taught through sport and how it can be further applied to real-life examples.
I am also looking forward to sharing my expertise with students who are keen to learn volleyball. I have played for a range of divisions and clubs in the WAVL and I have also coached along the way. I am excited to meet the students, parents, and fellow colleagues within the ASC community this year

Rugby Union
Recently a group of Year 8 to 11 students took part in a Rugby Union competition at the Wanneroo Rugby Union Club . These students demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship and collaborative teamwork. Each squad exhibited resilience and determination throughout the matches as they strived for first place. With their impressive performance, the female team earned their spot in the final, qualifying for the next round in a month’s time. Well done to all students who were involved.
Water Testing Experiments
Did you know that only 10% of plastic waste is recycled? The remaining 90% of plastics end up in our oceans, where they continue to break down, releasing toxic chemicals that enter our food chain. Year 11 Science in Practice students recently conducted tests comparing bottled water and tap water using testing kits generously provided by WasteSorted. Students were testing for contaminants and water quality to determine the suitability of free drinking water, with the overall aim of reducing plastic waste by eliminating the purchase of bottled water. Our tests found that the free drinking water was well within recommended ranges. Keep an eye out for the student infographics for tips on being more sustainable.
New staff: Milaan Kousari
We would like to welcome Milaan Kousari to our Student Support team as one of our College Psychologists. Milaan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to support our young people’s wellbeing.
Hi everyone, my name is Milaan Kousari, and I am pleased to be joining Aveley Secondary College as a School Psychologist for 2024. I have been working as a School Psychologist in Geraldton for the past three years, where I serviced over ten schools spanning from Carnarvon to Meekatharra. Having worked with so many people in different contexts, I have learnt the importance of working as a team and building and maintaining relationships to achieve desirable outcomes for students, parents, and schools. I have always been passionate about working with children and adolescents and take a student-centred approach when supporting them to achieve their goals. Outside of school, I enjoy playing soccer, going to the gym, eating brunch and drinking coffee with my wife, and spending time with family and friends.
I am very excited to begin working at Aveley Secondary College and look forward to the year ahead!
Swimming Carnival
Aveley Secondary College held our annual Swimming Carnival at Bayswater Waves on Wednesday. It was a fantastic day with students participating in a number of competitive races and fun novelty events, with Quenda placing first this year.

New staff: Giaan Kapp
We would like to welcome Giaan Kapp to our Mathematics Department. Giaan’s willingness to engage with all aspects of the College will make him a valuable contribution to our community.
Hello hello, my name is Giaan Kapp and I have joined the Mathematics team at Aveley Secondary College this year. I recently moved to Perth from regional Queensland where I worked as a Maths and HPE teacher for three years.
I build my practice around social constructivism and relational pedagogy and am super keen to continue to develop as a teacher here at Aveley. Outside of school I really enjoy playing sport (soccer, AFL, basketball and volleyball specifically) and spending my time discovering Perth as I haven’t lived in a major city in many years.
I look forward to continuing to meet students and parents as I establish myself in the Aveley community.
