Last weekend, Ms Mertens escorted four of our students on a cold and rainy morning to the School Chess League (West Zone). The chess team had to manage with the surprise COVID-19 restriction announcement that happened on the way to the event.
Their admirable performance and team spirit saw the team achieving two wins and a draw in the final round against some very experienced schools with well-established chess clubs. The students played well against a strong field, with Pratham attaining the highest score on the team. ASC came fifth in the school standings, scoring higher than schools like Corpus Christi, Perth Modern School, and Rossmoyne SHS in this particular Zone Event. The team reports being very tired but extremely happy with the days’ events and look forward to competing again.
We are very grateful to the organisers of the tournament Chess Association of WA, who kept everything going on Sunday despite the sudden COVID-19 restrictions. The Schools chess league tournaments have turned out to be very popular and well attended this year. The players are all really excited about competing again next year.
